Easily Explained

What is an ICHRA?

An Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA) lets employers reimburse employees tax-free for individual health insurance premiums and qualified medical expenses.

Employers set aside a monthly allowance for each eligible employee and then employees use this allowance to buy individual health insurance plans or pay for qualified medical expenses.

ICHRAs differ from traditional group plans. They offer employers predictable costs. Employees enjoy the freedom to choose plans that suit their needs best. The health plans that qualify as ICHRAs are individual health insurance plans available through the Affordable Care Act or Medicare.

When Can You Enroll in Your ICHRA Health Plan

Individuals can enroll in an Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA) plan during the following times:

Open Enrollment Period (OEP):

This is the annual window when individuals can purchase health insurance plans on the marketplace, typically from November to mid-December (dates may vary by state).

Special Enrollment Period (SEP):

Individuals can enroll outside the Open Enrollment Period if they experience a qualifying life event, such as an employer introducing an ICHRA. Employees have a 60-day window to enroll in an individual health insurance plan through a marketplace or directly with an insurer.

Top Myths About Switching to an ICHRA, and the Truth Behind Them

Switching to an Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA) can feel daunting. There are many misconceptions. Let us clear up the confusion so you can feel confident in your health plan choices.

Myth

ICHRA will cost me more money.

Fact

Your free visit connects you with a licensed Virtual Primary Care Provider (PCP) who will understand your health needs and answer your questions.

Myth

I won’t get good health coverage.

Fact

The health insurance plans you can buy with ICHRA often have the same benefits as traditional plans offered by employers. These plans cover important things like doctor visits, prescription medicine, and hospital stays. Plus, you get the option to pick a plan that best fits your needs, which means more control over your healthcare.

Myth

It’s too hard to sign up for a health plan on my own.

Fact

Signing up for a plan is easier than you might think! Employers set up ICHRA to work as smoothly as possible. They often provide tools, resources, and help from experts to make things simple for you. Once you pick your plan, the ongoing process is easy to manage. We can guide you through the process so it doesn't feel overwhelming. You can even sign up directly through Antidote.

Myth

ICHRA means I lose my employer’s health benefits.

Fact

Your employer is still helping you with your health costs! The only difference is that, with ICHRA, the money they give you goes toward the health insurance plan you choose. You’re not stuck with one-size-fits-all coverage anymore, and you’re still getting financial support.

Myth

ICHRA helps my company more than it helps me.

Fact

ICHRA is actually a win for both you and your employer. You get the freedom to pick a plan that fits your life, instead of being stuck with a plan that doesn’t work for you. Employers like it because it helps them manage health benefits better. Everyone benefits.

Myth

If I don’t use all my ICHRA money, it goes to waste.

Fact

ICHRA funds are only for health expenses, like premiums or doctor visits. If you don’t spend everything, the leftover money stays with your employer, but that’s normal. It’s all about making sure the money is used wisely for medical needs.
